1499 - Pretender to the throne Perkin Warbeck is hanged for reportedly attempting to escape from the Tower of London.  He had invaded England two years earlier, claiming to be the lost son of King Edward IV.

1863 - The Battle of Chattanooga begins, while Union forces led by General U.S. Grant reinforce troops to counter-attack the Confederates.

1876 - Corrupt Tammany Hall leader Willaim Magear "Boss" Tweed, is delivered to authorities in New York City after being captured in Spain.

1889 - The first jukebox goes into operation at the Palais Royale Saloon in San Franciso, California.

1936 - The first edition of Life magazine is published.

1943 - Two important atolls, Tarawa and Makin, fall to american forces.

1963 - The BBC broadcasts the first ever episode of Doctor Who, which is the world's longest running science fiction drama.
