1512 - Martin Luther becomes a doctor of theology.

1781 - Representatives of British commander George Cornwallis, handed over his sword and formally surrendered to George Washington and Jean-Baptiste Rochambeau at Yorktown, Virginia.

1805 - Austrian General Mack surrenders his army toe the Grand Army of Napoleon at the Battle of Ulm.  30,000 prisoners are captured and 10,000 casualties inflicted on the losers.

1864 - Union Army under Philip Sheridan destroy the Confederate Army under Jubal A. Early, at the Battle of Cedar Creek.

1873 - Yale, Princeton, Columbia, and Rutgers Universities, draft the first code of American football rules.

1933 - Germany withdraws from the League of Nations.

1959 - The first discotheque opens.

1987 - Known as Black Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, falls by 22%, a total of 508 points.

2005 - Saddam Hussein goes on trial in Baghdad, Iraq for his crimes against humanity.
